SM&P's History - How We First Made Our Mark
SM&P stands for Steve, Mike and Pat - it's that simple. These are the names
of the three Baker brothers who purchased a Vermeer M-470 trencher and founded
SM&P Construction Company in 1973. SM&P started out by burying cable
for their first customer -- SBC (known at the time as Indiana Bell). Within a
few years, SBC asked SM&P to locate and mark the very same cable they had
buried, effectively catalyzing SM&P's evolution from a cable burying
company to a cable locating company by 1979.
In the mid-80s, SM&P expanded from its central Indiana roots to Wisconsin,
ultimately serving customers in nine states. As the number of locates grew, so
too did the SM&P family from 3 brothers to 2,000 employees.
In 1993, the Indianapolis Water Company acquired SM&P. NiSource (formerly
known as NIPSCO) purchased SM&P in 1997. In 2001, The Laclede
Group added SM&P to its family of companies. Finally, in 2008, Kohlberg Partners
SM&P first made its mark on the underground utility locating industry by
offering customers a professional partnership based on quality at a fair price.
It is a tradition SM&P continues today.
